My Creative Writing Journey

October 7, 2026

It dawned on me that I began publishing poetry without explaining to my readers that I had actually begun my creative writing journey from the time I owned a computer in the early 2000s. I sort of just began typing away once my parents bought me a computer to start my first fiction (which I never finished), it being a weird fusion of Pokemon and Harry Potter and perhaps solely serving the purpose of a starting point for my writing journey.

I began writing poetry in college, and found some very old Haikus I’d written back then and might be sharing publicly for the first time because I don’t recall ever turning these in as a class assignment:

October 26, 2009

The wind blows, sands shift,
Empty poems guide new fools,
I can breathe again.

March 2, 2010

Cherry blossoms crash,
they freeze, we fall in circles,
time tears us apart.

June 19, 2010

Brown eyes glow blood red,
and white stars shine black fury,
naught to feed their thirst.

Here’s an assignment I turned into one of the literature classes I took at SDSU-IVC (I actually also obtained an English minor there):

10-6-10
Country of my Youth

There’s a place in the country of my youth,
there’s a spot in the midst of the fields,
where two trees stand alone,
between the road and the corpse of a ditch.

I go there at night, I go there in plight,
when all is wrong and nothing’s right,
the stars and my stress blazing bright.

I stand between the trees and the road,
and gaze at the stars, lost in my mind.
The phantom ditch looming behind me.
I rise into the sky.

Stars turn back time, cosmic light is time.
I relive my youth, and listen to the chime
of childish bliss, and again I feel fine.

My feet hit solid ground, smaller than before.
The crazy ditch can no longer touch me.
The trees rustle their welcome,
and I return to the road.

While at SDSU-IVC, I took an entire semester of Shakespeare, a summer fiction writing class where I wrote 3 short stories, and various literature/writing classes toward the English minor.

One of the goals I presently aspire to is to write my own plays, with a draft of a cast and the early beginnings of a plot presently waiting unattended on my phone somewhere.
